Understanding Subscription Types

Emercury supports two types of subscription settings:

1. Global Subscription (Default)

  • When a contact unsubscribes with Global settings, they are unsubscribed from all lists in your account.

  • This means they will no longer receive any emails from you, regardless of which list they were originally subscribed to.

  • Best used if you want to respect a universal unsubscribe across all communications and ensure compliance.

2. By List Subscription

  • When a contact unsubscribes under the By List setting, they are removed only from the specific list they opted out of.

  • If that same contact exists on multiple lists, they will continue to receive emails from those other lists.

  • Best used if you manage different content streams or separate brands within the same account, where a subscriber may only want to stop one type of communication but not all.

Note: By default, the subscription type is set to Global.

How to Change Subscription Settings

Follow these steps to update your default subscription type:

  1. Go to Account Settings

    • Click on your profile menu and select Account settings.

  2. Navigate to My Defaults

    • In the settings menu, select My defaults.

  3. Update Subscription Type

    • Under Subscription type, open the dropdown menu.

    • Choose either Global or By List depending on your preference.

  4. Save Changes

    • Confirm your selection to apply the new default across your account.

Example Scenarios

  • Use Global if:
You’re running a single brand and want to ensure that when a contact opts out, they stop receiving all communication from you.

  • Use By List if:
You manage separate newsletters (e.g., “Product Updates” and “Promotions”). A subscriber might want to stop promotions but still receive product updates.

Choosing the right subscription type ensures you respect subscriber preferences while maintaining healthy engagement across your lists.
